Garrett completed the Diploma course and is now owner Streetside Brewery, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
I chose Brewlab for the practical elements as well as the opportunity to be taught by many of the industry leaders in England. As I looked for a school in the US, I found that many only taught the theory behind brewing which while good did not further my career goals. I could learn theory in books, I wanted hands-on training at small, medium, and large breweries which is exactly what I got at Brewlab.
The benefits of Brewlab are immeasurable. Firstly, the education in classroom piece of the course has enabled me to step into brewing situations with a deep well of knowledge that I would not have had if I had simply worked my way up through the ranks.
Secondly, the practical brewing on the small scale (30L) and larger scale at local breweries helped prepare me for the world of professional brewing in a way I would not have been able to prepare for just through homebrewing. Thirdly, as someone who came from out of the UK the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and see various different breweries and brewing culture was one of the benefits I least expected from my time at Brewlab. In conjunction with the travel benefit, the people I met and lived with at Brewlab have become some of my best resources in the brewing community.
I relied on my experiences at Brewlab in setting up my own brewery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Having been able to travel throughout the Sunderland area and work at the breweries that Brewlab set us up at during the 3 months helped me learn what to do and what not to do in setting my own brewery. Without seeing those different breweries I don’t think I would have done as well as I did. As my classmates progress in their own brewing careers I hope to do collaborations with them when we can.
